Experimenting with Pastel Pencils

Painting Birds with pastel Pencils Class

Have you ever wanted to capture the beauty of birds with soft, vibrant color? Join us for Experimenting with Pastel Pencils: Painting Birds, an engaging workshop designed to introduce artists to the expressive possibilities of pastel pencils.

Whether you’re completely new to the medium or looking to expand your artistic skills, this class offers a relaxed and supportive environment where you’ll learn techniques that bring your bird portraits to life.

What You’ll Learn

In this hands-on class, you’ll discover how pastel pencils can be used to create beautiful, detailed bird artwork. Through step-by-step demonstrations, you’ll learn:

Layering techniques for rich color and depth
Blending methods to create soft transitions
Color mixing with pastel pencils
How to suggest feathers, texture, and form using line and shading
Tips for building confidence and developing your own artistic style

Individual guidance and feedback will be provided throughout the class, making it a great learning experience for artists of every level.

Materials to Bring

Pastel pencils (a small set is fine)
Pastel paper suitable for pastel pencils
Kneaded eraser
Pencil sharpener
Paper towels or wipes

Optional:

Graphite pencil for sketching
Small soft brush for removing pastel dust
Scrap paper for testing colors

A more detailed materials list will be shared by the instructor approximately two weeks before the class.

This workshop is open to all skill levels, including complete beginners. No prior experience with pastel pencils—or drawing birds—is required. If you’re curious about trying a new medium or simply enjoy creating art, this class is a wonderful opportunity to learn, experiment, and have fun.

This fall, I will be offering a wonderful selection of art and watercolor classes through LGS Recreation in Los Gatos. Registration to all of these classes starts August 7th. Registration links will be added on that date.

I am very excited to share this new schedule of courses with you!

As a special opportunity for my afternoon and working students who cannot attend morning classes, I will be offering a Five Mixed Media Bundle Series on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM, beginning September 8th through October 6th.

These classes are a fun introduction to a variety of painting and sketching mediums. Students may register for the full five-class bundle or choose individual classes. Students who register for the complete bundle get a discounted price for the five classes.

WATERCOLOR CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATION Make
captivating images using watercolor, ink, and watercolor pencils.
SCRATCHBOARD ILLUSTRATION Reverse drawing, engraving
using a sharp tool to scratch away black surface to reveal white.
TEXTURE IN WATERCOLOR Add depth and visual interest using

Printing Press Mono Print

CLASS NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Unlike other printmaking processes that produce multiple identical copies a mono print
is only one impression. Use a plexiglass board to make a design
with watercolor crayons. Transfer to a watercolor paper using the
printing press.

Scratch Board Illustration

CLASS NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Draw by engraving using a sharp tool to scratch away black surface to reveal a white color. Think of it as reverse drawing. Instead of making dark marks on a whitepaper, you create light marks on a dark surface to create an image. Commonly used to create realistic portraits of animals.
