About this Course
Scratchboard Illustration: Drawing with Light
Discover the fascinating art of scratchboard illustration in this fun, hands-on workshop with artist and instructor Elvira Rascov.
Scratchboard is a unique drawing technique that works almost in reverse. Instead of drawing dark lines on white paper, you use a special tool to scratch away a black surface, revealing the lighter layer underneath.By varying the pressure, direction, and density of your marks, you can create beautiful textures, details, light, and shadows.
In this introductory workshop, students will learn the basic techniques of scratchboard illustration and create their own finished artwork. We will explore how to use different types of marks to create texture and dimension, with a special focus on creating realistic subjects such as animals, birds, or other natural forms.
No previous drawing experience is required. Beginners are welcome, and students with some drawing experience can use the workshop to explore a new medium and develop their observational and rendering skills.
What students will learn:
Basic scratchboard techniques and tools
How to create different textures and patterns
How to use light and dark to create depth and dimension
Techniques for rendering fur, feathers, and other natural textures
How to develop a simple reference image into a finished scratchboard illustration
All necessary materials will be provided. Students will leave the workshop with a completed scratchboard artwork and the skills to continue exploring this unique medium at home.
