When painting outdoors, it’s important to be prepared for changes in temperature and lighting. Since we’ll be working in a dynamic outdoor environment, bringing the right materials will help set you up for a successful painting experience.
In this class, we will use watercolor or gouache. Our main focus will be on learning how to create a strong composition,
Materials to Bring:
- Paints watercolor, or gouache (set or tubes)
- Water containers Two plastic ones
- Watercolor paper (for watercolor and gouache painters) My favorite pad for Plein Air in Watercolor
- Sketchpad for thumbnail drawings. Here is one that works well for Plein air painting BUY HERE
- HB or 2B pencil BUY HERE
- Kneaded eraser and regular eraser. BUY HERE
- Easel and a portable chair (I will bring two small tables and portable easels to share). If you want to buy an easel for Plein Air here are some suggested brands. MEEDEN or this ONE Both of these easels are adjustable for watercolor painters. There is no need to buy an easel for this class you can work on a table and on your drawing board.

- Hat (for sun protection)

💡 Tip: Keep your materials simple and portable so you can easily move around and make multiple sketches. Start with smaller-sized paper —they’re less intimidating and allow you to work more freely while building confidence.
