In this class you will learn how to paint with gouache an opaque water-based paint with a creamy velvety finish that dries matte. Gouache is a versatile medium because it has a higher pigment.
It can be used in a creamy consistency that leaves a matte finish or it can be watered down and used like watercolor leaving a transparent and translucent layer.
It is a medium that dries quickly so you do not have to wait too long to apply the next layer.
This is the list of the suggested materials for this class.
I added the links where you can purchase them.
Paints
It is important to invest in good quality paints to obtain nice results with this medium. After considering teaching this class I have been trying different brands of gouache.
My recommendation is to buy a basic set from Winsor and Newton that gives you the best quality and you can learn how to mix the colors to obtain the secondary and tertiary colors. You can find this set HERE. Also, I recently found a cheaper set that the tubes are smaller, but you get more colors. It will work great for this class too. HERE is the link to buy it, I also found it in Michaels.
However, if you want a student grade set that gives you a lot of colors for cheaper price. You can buy the set of 24 paints from Arteza that I tried and for the price it will work for this class. You still will need to learn how to mix colors. You can find this set HERE
There are other brands in the market that are good too. Daniel Smith recently introduced Gouache colors. I tried them too and they are pretty good although there are a little more expensive. They have an introductory package with the primary colors that I purchased and tried. You can find that one HERE
You will need to buy the black color separate if you want to buy the Daniel Smith brand so you have a complete set. The black gouache color can be purchase HERE
Note if you buy from Dick Blick it will take longer the shipping so order soon.
Brushes
Synthetic paintbrushes: One half-inch angle shader, a quarter-inch filbert brush, a size 8 round brush, and a size two round brush. These are basic suggested brushes to bring to class.
With gouache it is better not to invest in high quality brushes. This set is ideal for the class you can buy it HERE
Paper
These are the recommended papers for gouache:
Any watercolor paper 140 lb/ 300 gm. Some artists recommend Hot press watercolor paper because of the smooth surface. However, you can use the cold press paper too. Here are some brands you can purchase:
Strathmore 300 Series Watercolor Paper Pad, 9×12 inches, 24 Sheets (140lb/300g) – You can buy it HERE
Arches Watercolor Paper 140 lb. Hot Press 12 Sheet Pad 9×12″. You can buy it HERE
It is fun to use color paper for gouache here are my recommended papers.
Strathmore Toned Tan Paper, 9×12 inches, vellum surface. You can purchase HERE
Stonehenge Aqua Black Pad, 140lb, Coldpress, 8 x 10 Inches, 15 Sheets. You can purchase HERE
The color papers are optional.
Gouache Palette
It is better to use a flat porcelain palette for mixing gouache colors. This I ordered and is a good option. You can purchase HERE
Also if you want to buy a cheaper option I found at Daiso a nice flat porcelain plate that can work too as a palette. Remember you need space to mix the colors.
